Automotive Memories

South Texas Car Club

The first car show we go to each year is sponsored by the South Texas Car Club. On the first weekend of the new year we drive down I-35 to the Live Oak Civic Center near San Antonio for 2 days of great cars and great people. Here are some photos of the classic cars at the 2007 show.

A 1923 Ford didn't originally look like this one. The owner has turned out a beautiful T-Bucket.

The details on the build are detailed in a radiator shell that makes for a great display.

The cab on this 1926 Ford street rod has a very distinctive look and I'll bet that blown engine will turn over the back tires while moving you down the highway.

Some street rodders won't settle for anything less than an open cab, open wheel car like this classic 1928 Ford T-Bucket.

Others prefer the classic look of an original. This 1930 Model A restoration includes the rumble seat.

Although Live Oak is an indoor show, the weather sometimes cooperates and the parking lot gathers more hot rods and classics to look at. One late arrival was this 1937 Ford 5 Window Coupe.

The purple 1938 Pontiac is a regular at Central Texas car shows and is always worth another look. The detail in the engine, interior and throughout the car is terrific.

We can only guess why the owner of this classic original 1939 Ford 2 door sedan named it "Ol' Buck 'n' Rut".

This 1947 Buick Sedanette has the sporty lines of a fastback, a beautiful interior and a massive engine to move all that Detroit iron.

Hood ornaments, chrome trim and brand badges used to be more elaborate, like this adornment on a 1953 Cadillac.

This beautiful Caddy was a late arrival at the show and lucky for us was parked in open space at the back of the hall.
The 53 Cadillac didn't sport the large tail fins of the late 1950's but still has plenty of style including fender skirts.

As General Motors luxury brand, Cadillac always delivers on comfort. The roomy interior of this 1953 model was certainly the way to travel.

Some folks prefer a roomy interior with a little more get up and go. This 1957 Chevy Nomad will certainly haul the groceries.

Talk about hauling the groceries! What do you do when your dad decides to sell his 1962 Ford pickup truck? You buy it and turn it into a pro street hot rod with lots of muscle. I find photographing red and orange cars difficult. You never quite capture the true brilliance of the paint like in this project.

Trust me, all the trophies in front of this 1964 Chevy Impala convertible are well deserved.

The '64 Impala SS has always been one of my favorites and this custom show car tops the list.
All the attention to detail, from the beautiful color scheme, to the one of a kind accents, has been meticulously reproduced throughout the car.

The trunk is no exception with high end stereo gear adorned with large Impala and SS trim.
From any angle this one of a kind Chevrolet Impala SS is an impressive feat of automotive restoration and customization.

1966 Corvette Sting Ray

"Back in the day", I had a Sting Ray. It was the Schwinn variety not the classic Corvette.
There was no mistaking the look of the 1966 Corvette Sting Ray. The fiberglass body has a distintive shape unlike any other american car.

This Vette has a carbuerated V-8 engine although fuel injection had been available for several years.

Hot rodders love big cars too, like this 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix. It had a big enough engine to move the luxurious body style along at better than the speed limit. Just don't tell the insurance company.

If you would rather build something yourself, this 1901 Oldsmobile display included technical drawings.
In 1901 this Olds must have been quite a sight on the city streets among all the horses.

Kaiser Frazer logoOccasionally, you're lucky enough to see some brand of automobile that is no longer made. In 2007, the South Texas Car Club show had 2 Kaisers on display. The blue Manhattan and the maroon Frazer just visible behind it. The Kaiser Frazer named for Henry J. Kaiser and Joseph Washington Frazer was the only new US automaker to achieve success after World War II, if only for a few years.

And sometimes you see two very different cars right next to each other. Right behind the classic British import, MG, is an American "rat rod".

The truth is, you never know what you'll see at a classic car show these days. But, it's always worth going just to discover something about automotive history. As I assemble this page, I'm preparing to leave for the 2008 show. I can't wait to gather more photos and history for this site.
