Every January there are collector car auctions in the Phoenix area. In 2010 the Russo and Steele auction suffered through a devastating storm that left hundreds of classic cars damaged. High winds knocked over the tents covering the cars staged for auction. Millions of dollars in damage was done by the tent support poles collapsing, the canvas and debris blowing around. Convertibles and cars with open or broken windows were then exposed to torrential rains.
Jim Greene from Street Rods Forever in Austin, TX took a fully restored 1972 El Camino to the auction. This car had a complete frame off restoration with only all new genuine GM parts used, right down to the rubber bushings. A big block Chevrolet engine was installed with a completely new drive train. The owner estimates he had over $60,000.00 invested in this trophy winning muscle car. The car had virtually no miles on it after the rebuild and had been stored indoors under a car cover for the past 5 years.
Unfortunately, the El Camino was one of the many victims of the storm in Scottsdale. As you can see below, the rear window and passenger side glass were broken out. The body and trim suffered considerable damage that resemble hail dents. The paint looks like it had been sanded in spots due to the tent canvas riding over the car.

This represents only one of the many fine classic cars that were scheduled for auction that suffered damage and ultimately prevented them from changing hands. In addition to the financial loss, there is also an emotional toll on the men and women who spend countless hours restoring these automotive treasures. It's back to the shop to start again for many.... |
